We're not going to...

Waste your time spruiking our scrumptious menu, or how we offer the best local produce and seasonal fare in town.

We absolutely refuse to indulge our love of cooking delicious food that packs a sensational punch, or our passion for delivering a simple eating experience with a home-style allure.

We reject the opportunity to let you know that our breakfasts are the best in Brisbane. Hands down. And we definitely aren’t going to mention how our team is quite possibly the most charming bunch you will ever meet.

But we will say that...

If you want to indulge in a whole new world of savoury goodness, you need to come and try us out today.

"A great spot. Food was healthy and delicious. An awesome area out the back for the kids to play in (we felt very welcomed with a newborn and toddler). Upstairs was air conditioned and probably a bit quieter for those not wanting kid interaction. Thanks for the lovely friendly service."

In the News

Good times ahead at this friendly local cafe in Wilston

Anooska Tucker-Evens May 21, 2022

Willow & Spoon cafe in Wilston, in Brisbane’s inner north, had its business hard hit in February’s freak flood event, with a power outage causing him to lose $10,000 worth of produce, while the entire outdoor area was flooded. To make matters worse, the power wasn’t reconnected for more than a week, delaying the clean-up process and costing the business tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue as the cafe wasn’t able to operate.

If that wasn’t devastating enough, it came on the back of a series of break-ins at the venue, which resulted in huge losses and his insurance premiums more than doubling; plus all the dramas that come with running a hospitality operation in a pandemic.

But on a busy Sunday morning at the cafe, you would never know the heartbreak and challenges Nunns has endured, with a big smile plastered across his face as he welcomes diners with charm and enthusiasm. You would also never know the damage caused to the cosy timber cottage’s deck. What was in February a swimming pool, is now a covered outdoor area filled with diners and their pooches, leading to a grassed area with a small kids’ zone.

We sit on the footpath outside the cosy upstairs dining space, with fluffy blankets thoughtfully draped across the back of wooden stools for those who feel the cold.

The staff, who are every bit as hospitable and convivial as their leader Nunns, soon take drink orders, with a cappuccino and a flat white made with Supreme Coffee Roasters beans as smooth as a freshly polished bowling ball. While a chai latte, which sits alongside smoothies, thickshakes, cold-pressed juices, and beer, wine and cocktails on the drinks menu, delivers a beautiful cardamom and ginger hit.

As for the food, this is breakfast that moves well and truly outside the box. Think nacho bowls loaded with chipotle chicken, a mushroom cassoulet, and the signature dish of cured pork belly with truffled scrambled eggs, malted barley toast and buttered leeks.

The Dirty Bird Burger ($25) scores rave reviews from my dining companions, with the bird in question a piece of succulently centred Southern-fried chicken with a perfectly crisp coating wedged in between a fluffy potato roll with lettuce, tangy, vinegary buffalo sauce, sour cream and a just-hot-enough mojo salsa, served with a basket of quality beer-battered chips.

A knackwurst sausage wrapped in bacon ($26) is exactly that with the cheddar-infused hash brown on the side the star of the plate; while the big surprise is the house-made toasted muesli ($15). More like a granola of nuts, oats, cranberries and seeds topped with stewed and fresh blueberries, it forms a crescent around a puddle of dark chocolate-crowned coconut yoghurt and it’s utterly more-ish.

Willow & Spoon is a cafe which has endured tremendously hard times, but its fighting spirit is what keeps it at the top of its game.

Toast to a French classic

by Anooska Tucker-Evans November 17, 2019

“I've never really been a big fan of French toast. I've always considered it and excessively eggy, usually soggy, and largely overhyped use of stale bread people have curiously been conned into thinking it's "fancy" because it has French in its title.

But Willow and Spoon in Wilston in Brisbane's inner north, has me reconsidering my opinion of the breakfast classic known as pain perdu in France.

This quaint and homely cafe with a huge outdoor area filling in old timber cottage along Newmarket Rd does one of the best versions I've ever eaten.

Made with buttery, honey-hued brioche that's lighter than a kite in a cyclone, it's sloshed across lashings of Nutella and peanut butter, with a chocolatey, nutty crumble and fresh raspberries floating in a tart berry coulis to cut through all that intense, sugary richness.

It's a dish I'd happily eat again and again, and considering my usual aversion to the whole concept, that says a lot.

But in a way, it's also unsurprising, with Willow and Spoon a Brisbane breakky institution, renowned for its sweets.

In fact, they have a whole menu dedicated to them available from 7 am including lemon curd with shortbread and Chantilly cream apple and rhubarb crumble and a chocolate brownie with raspberry coulis and coconut gelato

While deserts keep things classic there's also a feast of savoury options where the imagination runs wild and a little fun he's had with dishes inspired by everywhere from Mexico and Spain to Japan.

Take perhaps cured pork belly with truffle scrambled eggs, malt barley toast, piquillo mayo and buttered leeks or how about chorizo, morcilla and chicken chorizo with steed grapes, aioli and guindilla chillies on barley toast, or maybe a fish taco with creamed feta, salsa and carrot kraut.

The poke bowl chicken Katsu curry is a kooky fusion of the Hawaiian favourite poke with the Japanese classic Katsu and works as a healthier alternative to the usually calorific version of the latter, with the typical mountain of white rice replaced with nests of shaved on julienned veggies like beans, carrots, zucchini, radish and sprouts with a thin, light interpretation of the traditional gravy hidden below to dip the super crunchy pieces of battered and fried chicken into.

Coffee is from Supreme Roasters and is creamy and well balanced as identical twins on a seesaw, while there are also old-fashioned thick shakes, loose leaf tea, a smoothie of the day, cold-pressed juices and iced drinks. And if you fancy a tipple, you'll find a brief collection of basic beer and wine.

Service is a standout here, with staff not missing a beat, picking up on the finer details and doing it with a smile. It's that and the clever fare which cement why the cosy and comforting Willow and Spoon continues to be a crowd favourite and is sure to remain one.”
